Every year HMRC issue a list of some of the most amusing (and unsuccessful) excuses they have received from taxpayers who have neglected to complete their self assessment tax returns in time. Some of the latest and greatest include:
· My tax return was
on my yacht, which caught fire
· A wasp in my car
caused me to have an accident, and my tax return, which was inside my car, was
· My wife helps me
with my tax return, but she had a headache for ten days!
· My dog ate my tax
return, and ALL of the reminders
· My husband left
me, and took our accountant with him. I’m currently looking for a new
· My child
scribbled all over my tax return
· The postman doesn’t deliver to my houseIf you do have a genuinely reasonable excuse for not filing your tax return on time, HMRC may agree to waive or cancel any late filing penalties, but we don’t recommend using any of the above!
